I have a 40/50 rule. Page 40 is the one that I read in the bookshop or library to see whether I like the sound of a book, and 50 is the number of pages I read before deciding whether to give up on a book. It seems to work fairly well – I feel 50 is enough to judge whether the book is going to ‘grab’ me but doesn’t waste too much time if I decide not to read it.

So far I've just put down one book because I didn't like it, I had read about 80 pages before decided that the book wasn't to my liking. I have encountered this problem again now with Daphne du Maurier's book My cousin Rachel and I'm a bit disappointed in myself for not liking it. Here my Monday post
